Turns out, attending a vampire-hunting academy when you're secretly a vampire is... complicated.
I'm Gloria, channeler at the Beltraine Sisterhood, and I'm terrified of exactly four things:
The Mothers: Three ancient headmistresses who've spent centuries perfecting the art of seeing through bullshit. I avoid eye contact like it's a competitive sport. They've been running Beltraine since forever. They claim a war is brewing between witches and vampires, but I only care about the blood brewing in bodies.
The Vestals: Each Mother has a personal ghost-pet that makes my skin crawl. Paracelsus floats like pearlescent death at the gate. Obsidia oozes corruption and leaves gashes in reality wherever it drifts. Aurelius is basically sentient vapor with an attitude problem. They're supposed to protect us, but mostly they just hover around looking ominous and making me wonder if they can smell what I am. Spoiler: they probably can.
The Moon: Acting weird lately. Because when the sun was extinguished centuries ago and plunged Nocteraia into eternal darkness, witches created the Salvia Moon to replace it. Four bewitched phases that don't just mark time, they mark how hungry I get. And during Salvia Moons? The moon literally burns vampires alive. Great for the Sisterhood. Terrible for me. Some nights I'm a student. Other nights I'm dodging moon beams.
Chain of Glory: Ghastly ritual to incinerate...wait for it... vampires! You actually can't make this up. The Sisterhood conducts them sometimes. Worst part? I have to be at the center of it as the witches channel my energy. Best part? Agonizing pain has a way off taking your mind off the obvious.
My best friend Faelina lets me feed from her in secret, but even she doesn't know the whole truth. And it's getting harder to keep myself from draining her dry. Because nothing says friendship like wanting to rip your roommate’s throat out.
